The Paathshaala (meaning prayer hall) is a Tamil language novel by Indian author Vedachalam Murugan. It narrates the story of two friends, one rich and the other poor, when they unexpectedly visit a "paathshaala" in India, which was closed for renovation. The novel has been translated into many languages and has sold over four million copies in three decades. It is regarded as an iconic work of modern Tamil literature. The Paathshaala was adapted into a 1981 film directed by Mani Ratnam with similar title and plot, which won several awards including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment at 1982-83. Another adaptation directed by A. Venkatesh in 1996, with the same title and plot was released with the same name and plot. The story is set in a small town in Tamil Nadu. The plot revolves around how two friends, one rich and the other poor, visit a "paathshaala" (prayer hall), which was closed for renovation because it had been declared unsafe for worshiping gods and goddesses. When they enter, they see that there is a "janmashtami" (birthday of Lord Krishna) puja going on and that the "paathshaala" has been locked by police to prevent anyone from trespassing inside while the puja takes place. The rich and educated, but arrogant and atheist "chandar" (grandson of the town's landlord) and the poor and uneducated, but humble and devoted servant "sundari" (who is also a tenant of the landlord), sneak into the "paathshaala". In doing so, they commit a sacrilege by entering a holy place without any religious faith or purification. They are unaware that they have been followed secretly by some little boys who have been charged by their parents to ensure that the two adults do not create any mischief inside. The children tell their parents of this misdeed committed by the two adults. When they learn that the police have locked them in, the two friends start enjoying their stay inside. They feel that the "paathshaala" is safe and they will not be discovered because all of them are believed to be no longer alive. The friends make many plans to elope with each other, but their plan fails when they are discovered by the police officers who catch hold of them. They finally secure bail for themselves and after spending some time inside, they are told by their lawyers that there is no provision for bail in such cases of sacrilege committed within a holy place. The friends decide to leave the "paathshaala" through the only entrance, which is locked. They run towards the closed gate and start covering themselves with mud so that they do not get noticed by the security personnel, who are waiting there to lock them inside. The four security personnel of the "paathshaala", who had come out of curiosity after hearing of their mischievous plan, try to stop them from escaping, but they fail because two of them are overcome by fear while two others walk over to help their colleagues. The four security personnel are unable to move fast enough on account of their fear. cfa1e77820
